Christmas Eve Traditions To Add This Year

Whether you have a list of traditions or not, here are a few great recommendations that you can add to your Christmas Eve celebrations this year!

1. Christmas Eve Pickle

This tradition is one that will tickle everyone. It's German in origin, though no one seems to be exactly sure how it started. Basically the pickle-shaped ornament is the last one that goes on the tree on Christmas Eve, and it's hidden deep in the branches. Whichever kid finds it first in the morning gets an extra gift from Santa.

2. Peppermint Pig

Believing that pigs were good luck, the Victorians started this tradition. To make it your own, order a peppermint pig, then smash it after dinner. Share the candy around the table, and it's good luck for the rest of the year.

3. Pajama Elves

Christmas is a great time for cozy new pajamas, especially because the elves can deliver them on Christmas Eve. There's even a book, The Pajama Elves by Hayden Edwards, that tells the tale of elves bringing magic pajamas that you can incorporate as well.

4. Caroling

Gather a group, and go singing through your neighborhood, at a local nursing home or at a hospital. You will spread holiday cheer and tire out little ones who are amped up on sugar cookies and dreams.

5. Takeout

With all the hustle and bustle and preparation for the big day, sometimes ordering takeout or pizza from a favorite restaurant is a great way to take a little break and just enjoy some good food. Turn on your favorite holiday movie, and snuggle up.

6. Christmas Key

Don't have a chimney? No worries, just leave Santa a magic Christmas key. Hang it outside on Christmas Eve, and he's sure to have no problem at all getting in and leaving gifts.

7. Reindeer Food

While cookies and milk are good for Santa, don't forget his trusty sleigh mates. Sprinkling this mix of oats, birdseed and sparkly sugar crystals will dazzle your kids and make the birds happy in the morning too.

8. Track Santa

The NORAD Santa Tracker lets kids (and adults) track the Big Guy via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other means. Volunteers answer calls and emails from around the world to keep everyone informed just where in the world Santa is on the big night.

Still Have Last Minute Christmas Shopping?

Still have some people left on your Christmas list? We have a solution...
The subscription box, it's the gift that keeps on giving!  Who doesn’t love to get a little surprise in the mail each month or quarterly or however often depending on the subscription?  That’s the spirit behind the several of these services out there, and they make excellent gifts!
Over the past decade, the subscription box has become quite the thing to do.  There is a subscription box for everything, sometimes even more than one for a particular interest.  All you have to do is Google the interest you have, and then add the words “subscription box” after it.  What you’ll see are results for different companies and even reviews so you can choose a box that’s best for you, I mean them!
A few great example would be; Taste Trunk (Cooking), Winc (Wine), Glossy Box (Makeup), Bijoux Box (Jewelry), Graze (Food), Stitch Fix (Clothes), and Bean Box (Coffee).
Or…you can check out subscription market sites like CrateJoy and Hello Subscription.
There are a few different ways you can look at choosing a subscription box to add to your wish list:
  • Choose a box that focuses on something you’re interested in and know you like.
  • Choose a box that focuses on something you’re interested in and have never tried.
  • Choose a box that pushes you to try something different.
Many subscriptions give you the option of trying it for a short period of time, maybe one to three months, or purchasing for a longer period of time.  Most often for gifts, choosing one to three months may be more affordable for the gift givers in your life.
Another thought are the meal delivery services, which work very similarly to the surprise of subscription boxes.  This is a great gift idea to list on baby registries as well.  A few to check out are PlatedBlue Apron, and Hello Fresh.  There are often local meal delivery services as well that you may prefer.  With Giftster being universal and small business friendly, make sure to check them out as well and add them to your wish list.
While shopping for Christmas crates this holiday season if you're looking to buys sell, or invest in Real Estate subscribe to the Springs Summit Group. We don't send you boxes every month but we do make sure your real estate transactions are as smooth, and effortless as possible. Contact us anytime, we're here for you!

Trying to Budget For Christmas?

Christmas is coming up quick so start budgeting now!

Did you end up with a credit card bill shock last January because you didn’t budget your Christmas gifts? It’s the time of year to start thinking about your budget for Christmas. We don’t want the same surprises as last year, so this year we are going to fix that.

Here’s the deal…

As of today there are just under 100 days left until Christmas (in case you didn’t know they have scheduled another Christmas this year…. shocking! I know right!?!).
That means sometime in the next 100 days or so we are all going to panic and go crazy about how much we need to do and shop for in the short time. In doing that, we will pay more than we need to, buy things on impulse and just be all around foolish in our seasonal shopping ( it’s ok we all do it). Plus it turn us into these huge freakin’ balls of stress.
NOT THIS YEAR. NOT THIS TIME. WE ARE BETTER THAN THIS!

Let’s Avoid the Money Shock This Year and Start Saving Now

Instead of getting to December and realizing that you haven’t saved enough for Christmas this year let’s try something new. Let’s get set up for a successful Christmas.
It doesn’t take long to do.
Here’s what you need. (Pick one of the 2 options)

Method 1: How Much Did You Spend on Christmas Last Year?

Step 1: Find Last Years Grand Total

If your Christmas shopping is pretty much the same from year to year, then this is an easy way to go. Go back into Mint or Quicken, or your bank/credit card statements from last year and figure out how much you spent on Christmas.
Let’s say you spent $1000 in total on Christmas related shopping and activities last year.

Step 2: Take That Amount and Divide it by the Days you Have Left.

If you spent $1000 and have roughly 100 days left until Christmas then you can figure out how much you need to be saving every day to avoid the dreaded January bill shock.

$1000/100 = $10 a day needs to be saved.

Step 3: Automate That Amount into a Separate Account.

In our example you need to be saving $10 a day to make sure you have enough to cover last years expenses err… festivities.  Set up an automatic transfer to a separate savings account for that amount.
Do it every day if possible or every week. This will make your holiday season a little more festive when you know there is money in the bank.

One last thing…

If you have made new friends this year and need a little more money go ahead and bump up that number. Going from $10 to $11 a day will put an extra $100 into your savings account.

Method 2: Who are you shopping for?

Step 1: Make a List of Everyone You Need to Buy For and Total How Much You Will Spend

If you are super organized you may have last years list still kicking around (hint: if you put it in Excel or Word it’s there for you every year). If not brainstorm everyone you need to buy for this year.
If you are like a lot of families you probably set a limit on how much you want to spend on each person. It’s a good easy conversation to have with those you feel close enough to have this conversation with.

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 above in Method 1

Look, most of the stress around the holidays comes from not planning things out. This quick little process will save you stress, financial headaches, and may get you started (and finished) your shopping long before you may usually start.
I know it’s early but that’s how we work here. Think in advance, plan for it, execute the plan.

If You Want Bonus Points

For the keeners out there: Try and have all your shopping done by the end of October. That way you can watch everyone else fight the crowds and you can sit back and relax.

Budgeting = Freedom

Budgeting gives you freedom. Take a few minutes now and get everything set up to help pay your bills in January when they come around. And while you're thinking on those presents remember the importance of budgeting as a whole. Especially if a new house is coming up in your future making sure your finances are where you want them is key! But it's also key to use the best Agents for your transactions and here at the Springs Summit Group we'll make sure to make the transaction as smooth and effortless as possible. So shop for presents, but there's no need to shop Real Estate agents, we are here for you!

What to do with that leftover TURKEY!

Roast turkey: that centerpiece of the Thanksgiving table. How frequently do we prepare turkey throughout the rest of the year? Not as often as we might; turkey can be very straightforward to cook and, thanks to its high-quality protein and low levels of fat (particularly lean turkey breast) can be a healthful option, too.

If you find yourself with a pile of turkey leftovers this holiday season, we have a few clever ways to make next-day use of the Thanksgiving bird. And if you’re looking for good year-round turkey recipes, we’ve got you there as well.

Chef Meg’s Herb-Roasted Turkey

Let’s start with this: the classic roast turkey recipe, the only one you’ll ever need. Fragrant with orange and herbs, this classic roast turkey earns the spotlight on your holiday table, and it makes darn tasty leftovers, too.

Classic Grilled Turkey Sandwich

With a slice of reduced-fat Swiss cheese and a topping of zingy cranberry sauce, this will be your new go-to turkey sandwich. Use high-quality low-sodium deli turkey, or take thin slices of breast meat from your holiday roast.

Mini Turkey Pot Pies

Press rounds of prepared piecrust (homemade or store-bought) into muffin tins or ramekins, prick the dough with a fork and bake at 425 for 8 to 10 minutes until the crusts are golden brown. Fill with leftover turkey, dressing, potatoes (or any Thanksgiving side), gravy; warm the pies in the oven for a few minutes before serving. Top crust is optional!

Turkey Enchilada Casserole

Cooked turkey (white and dark meat, chopped) is a great substitute for chicken in your family’s favorite dishes. Here, you can pair cooked turkey with packaged salsa, whole-wheat tortillas and some Jack cheese.

Turkey "Manhattan" Sandwiches

I’m not sure where the name came from, but this was a Thanksgiving leftover staple in my family when I was growing up. For each serving, toast a slice of whole-grain bread, then top with sliced turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy for a hearty open-face sandwich.

Leftover Turkey Tostadas

Tear or chop cooked dark-meat turkey into bite-sized chunks. Heat corn tortillas in a dry skillet or hot griddle; top with turkey, shredded lettuce, shredded low-fat Monterey Jack or cheddar cheese, prepared salsa and fat-free Greek yogurt.

Turkey Hash

Saute shredded potatoes (from your grocer’s refrigerator case), a medium onion, diced, and a green or red bell pepper, diced, in a little olive oil until the vegetables are soft and golden brown. Add 1 cup of shredded cooked turkey (dark meat works well) and season with salt and pepper. Cook until the hash is crispy brown in spots; top each serving with a fried egg, if desired, or sprinkle on low-fat Cheddar cheese.

Greek Turkey Burgers

Ground turkey makes a terrific lower-fat substitute for ground beef in burgers; this recipe from Chef Meg features the Mediterranean flavors of Feta cheese, mint and oregano.

Turkey Chili with Corn and Black Beans

Not a leftovers recipe, but rather another great use for ground turkey. This low-fat chili packs a ton of heat, so adjust the amount of chili powder if you’d like.

Terrific Turkey Meatloaf

This meatloaf recipe scored big ratings on SparkRecipes, and no wonder. It features lean ground turkey, a splash of Worcestershire sauce, Parmesan cheese and flavorful spices; a great alternative to higher-fat meatloaf made of pork and/or beef.

What is your favorite way to eat leftover turkey? Here at the Springs Summit Group we're partial to the Smorgasbord Sandwich; everything leftover from Thanksgiving Dinner between two slices of bread. It is Perfection! Speaking of perfection, if you have any Real Estate needs this holiday season please don't hesitate to contact us, we're here to be your resource!

10 Reasons to Love Colorado Springs

The Great Outdoors

Colorado Springs has some of the best outdoor activities in the country. Outside Magazine named it one of the Top 10 Best Big Cities for Active Families. They also named it America's Best City Overall
There are parks and trails scattered throughout every part of Colorado Springs. Many of the trails are connected, so you can hike or ride to your hearts content, through what seems like an endless amount of trails.
There are also excellent camping spots in the mountains, just minutes from downtown Colorado Springs. Tourists travel here every year to experience camping in the Rocky Mountain. There really is nothing like it.

Local Events in Colorado SpringsLocal Events

The size of Colorado Springs makes the local events big enough to remember, but small enough to enjoy. The Air Force Academy graduation ceremony is one of the highlights of the year, with the Thunderbirds air show visible from miles around.
Colorado Springs has many large events as well. The Broadmoor World Arena and the Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts are two of the main concert venues in the area, with performances by legends like Jerry Seinfield, Rod Stewart, and many more.
There are also MANY local farmer’s markets, festivals, parades, and gatherings throughout the year spread out all over Colorado Springs. In the summer months there are so many events on the weekends that it’s impossible to keep up with them all.

Healthy Living in Colorado SpringsHealthy Living

It’s common for people to naturally lose weight when they move to Colorado Springs because the elevation causes your body to work harder. We also have a very dry climate, which requires people to drink more water. Extra water and elevation exertion naturally help people stay healthier.
The stunning beauty of the area, mixed with a supreme climate, encourages people to get out of their homes more often and experience nature. Hiking, biking, walking, and climbing are part of the experience of living in Colorado Springs.
To top it off, Colorado Springs offers many healthy dining options throughout town that make eating healthy exciting & effortless. It’s simply a part of the culture of this city. Colorado Springs was named the 2nd Fittest City in America by Men’s Fitness Magazine.

Local Community in Colorado SpringsCommunity

At first glance, Colorado Springs may seem like a large growing city that has moved on from the good ole days of local small town community. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Colorado Springs is a city that encourages local community. With weekly local farmer’s markets, and a full week devoted specifically to small businesses, the sense of community here is very strong.
Since the emergence of Facebook Groups, many people are able to move here and easily connect with like minded people. From hiking with dogs, to homeschool groups, to cooking groups,  there is never of shortage of people to meet and share life with.

Affordability in Colorado SpringsAffordability

According to the US Census Bureau, the median house value between 2010-2014 in Colorado Springswas estimated to be $208,600. The median house value for the whole State of Colorado during that same time period was $239,400. That means real estate in Colorado Springs cost roughly 13% less than the average for the State.
Many out-of-town home buyers relocating to Colorado Springs are surprised to find out how reasonably priced our homes are here. Our property taxes and home owners insurance are also much less than Texas, California, and New York. With all of these things considered, Colorado Springs is very affordable in comparison with other popular cities in the U.S.

Sustainability in Colorado SpringsSustainable Economy

When a large percentage of a city's economy is based off of one or two large corporations, the financial health of the city is only as strong as those companies. Business with less than 500 employees make up 92% of the local economy in Colorado Springs. This means that our economy is not supported by one or two large businesses, which helps strengthen our economic sustainability.
The support for small business in Colorado Springs is very strong. There is one week out of the year where all of the local residents are encouraged to only shop small businesses for the whole week. It’s a mindset that the city has adopted and supported for many years. The U.S. Military has a very strong presence in the city as well, which also helps boost our economy every year.

4 Full Seasons in Colorado Springs4 Full Seasons

This is a topic that comes up often in conversations with people who have recently relocated here. Residents of Colorado Springs can take this fact for granted because we're used to it. Our 4 seasons are all very distinct. Summer, Winter, Spring, and Fall all have their unique traits and predictability.
Our tourist season never really stops because each season offers unique & exciting opportunities. The Fall brings spectacular golden mountains covered in changing Aspen trees, the Winter offers world class skiing, the Spring and Summer mean camping and hiking that are second to none. With each season comes new experiences that make the entire year in Colorado Springs is amazing.
The Dry air here means the low temps aren't as cold and the high temps aren't as hot as even milder temps in a more humid area. We enjoy mild climate year round, with an occasional blizzard or hail storm sprinkled in to keep it interesting. :)

Here’s a breakdown of the temperature averages:

Seasonal Temperature Averages for Colorado Springs

Air Quality in Colorado SpringsAir Quality

Colorado Springs was voted the 5th best air quality in the nation in this SafeWise report. Our elevation and dry climate provide a much better air quality than other parts of the country. Check out this picture on Realtor.com showing the visual difference between Los Angeles and Colorado Springs.
It’s common for people from other cities to notice the air quality difference right away. The air in Colorado Springs is dry and mild with very little smog. This is great for people with health problems who need fresh clean air. It’s also great for athletes and olympic trainers, of whom many train right here in Colorado Springs.

Small Town CharmSmall Town Charm

One of the greatest things about Colorado Springs is that it is big enough to offer all of the amenities of a large city, but small enough to make you feel like it’s a small town. Most city downtown areas are only used for business, but Colorado Springs downtown is equally a tourist spot, super charming and full of great shops, bars, and restaurants.
Within a few miles of Downtown, you’ll find Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs. These areas have some of the most enchanting streets to walk on, and are idyllic for locals and tourists alike. In the Summer months, these areas are typically pretty crowded, because many tourists enjoy revisting them every year.
The Broadmoor area is more of an upscale historic part of town that has a intrigue like no other. Be sure to check out the Broadmoor Hotel and the Colorado Springs Zoo on that side of town. They are both stunning must see attractions.

National Monuments in Colorado SpringsHistoric Landmark

For a town of over 400,000 people, Colorado Springs has it's share of Landmarks, both National and Local.  The most notorious National Landmark is Pikes Peak, whose beauty inspired the poem "America the Beautiful" and was therefore nicknamed "America’s mountain". When the Gold Rush took place in the early 1900’s, travelers would use Pike’s Peak as a beacon to guide them to the area. Standing at 14,114’, this monster of a mountain is always within visual range. It’s the most prominent feature of Colorado Springs and is admired by travelers from all over.
Garden of the Gods, also located in Colorado Springs, is considered to be one of the most photographed tourist destinations in America. It is a vast park with stunning red rock formations unlike any other public landmark. The park is free to the public, with paved walkways around the main formations, and 15 miles of more rugged trails for hiking or horseback riding.
Seven Falls, The Cliff Dwellings, Cave of the Winds, and the Royal Gorge are a few other incredible, unique places that are sure to impress.  There are also endless hiking and biking trails to lesser known areas in the mountains that locals enjoy, which are equally as impressive as the more famous Landmarks, in their own ways.

Bottom Line

So if you've lived here your whole life, or just moved or are planning to move here, be sure to take advantage of all the wonderful things this beautiful city has to offer. Are you looking to come here? Perhaps you just want to change neighborhoods? Either way the Springs Summit Group knows this city and we are here to take care of any of your Real Estate needs.
